The Upper Deadman's Creek Road Crossing
N. Hays County

by Bob Harms ()
Driving across Deadman's Creek at Purola is feasible only a one spot, and even then if the water is not high — certainly not when the creek is flooding. On several occasions our car was on the wrong side when the creek came up. Crossing is not normally a challenge, but the brakes can get wet — once they rusted just enough to prevent releasing the hand brake. Even now with the creek dry I never set the hand brake. We walk across on large stepping stones, some so large I can barely move them — but with high water these are carried into a pool below the crossing.

The creek at this spot became dry for the first time in August 2006, the flow returning only when all upstream pools had filled in January of 2007. When the creek dries, this always starts at the north boundary and gradually reached the crossing. In October 2008 it happened for the second time, and the crossing has been bone dry ever since.
